Collaborative Meeting on Immigration Issues
In an effort to enhance international cooperation, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, met with Kirstjen M. Nielsen, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, to discuss key matters concerning immigration and border management.
Topics of Discussion: Immigration Strategies and Security
Strengthening Immigration System Integrity
June 4, 2018—Washington, DC – Minister Hussen and Secretary Nielsen engaged in a comprehensive dialogue to reinforce their partnership in managing immigration and securing borders. They addressed several critical topics such as irregular northbound migration, visa regulations, and biometric screening, as well as exploring updates to the Safe Third Country Agreement.
Addressing Misconceptions and Visa Concerns
The meeting underscored the mutual importance of preserving the integrity of immigration and asylum systems. Secretary Nielsen pointed out that individuals entering the U.S. with valid visas, who subsequently seek asylum in Canada, risk having their U.S. visas revoked. Minister Hussen highlighted Canada’s efforts to inform U.S. residents about the risks associated with irregular migration.
Cooperative Efforts on Border Management
Canada and the U.S. have a longstanding collaborative history in border management. Recent joint efforts include sharing information about surges in asylum seekers from Nigeria. Minister Hussen appreciated the cooperation in addressing visa issuance challenges for Nigerian nationals, noting the prevalence of asylum seekers with valid U.S. visas entering Canada.
Official Statements
“The conversation with Secretary Nielsen was fruitful. Continuous dialogue is vital for maintaining a secure and efficient immigration system. Although formal negotiations on the Safe Third Country Agreement are not yet in progress, I am eager to continue discussions and cooperation to enhance border management.”
