Expansion of Student Direct Stream Enhances Francophone Immigration
From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
Latest Developments
Starting September 9, 2019, Canada is extending the Student Direct Stream (SDS) to international students from Senegal and Morocco. This initiative is designed to streamline the study permit application process for students from these regions.
Enhanced Opportunities for Senegalese and Moroccan Students
August 30, 2019 – Ottawa – The expansion of the SDS to Senegal and Morocco offers a quicker, more efficient path to obtaining study permits. Canada aims to attract top international talent by offering swift processing times and reliable services.
Initially launched in 2018, the SDS covers applicants from China, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam, with processing times averaging less than three weeks. According to a recent OECD report, Canada remains a prime destination for students seeking high-quality education and employment opportunities post-graduation. Students who graduate from Canadian institutions with local credentials and work experience are well-positioned for permanent residence applications via Express Entry.
Since 2017, Express Entry candidates with strong French language skills have been eligible for additional ranking points. This initiative enhances their chances of becoming permanent residents, thus contributing to the growth of Francophone communities outside Quebec.
Expanding SDS to students from Senegal and Morocco aligns with the Government’s Francophone Immigration Strategy, encouraging young French speakers to study in Canada.
