Current Efforts in Resettling Afghan Refugees
The Canadian government is devoted to resettling at least 40,000 Afghan nationals swiftly and safely. As of now, 12,160 Afghan refugees have found a new home in Canada, with more arriving every week.
During National Volunteer Week, we highlight the significant contributions of volunteers in supporting newcomers. This year’s theme, “Volunteering is Empathy in Action,” showcases the empathy Canadians demonstrate daily by welcoming refugees through various donations and initiatives:
- Qumers Wejdan, an Afghan lawyer in Toronto, collaborated with Children Without Borders and the Canadian-Afghan Lawyers Association to launch a fundraiser that surpassed its $25,000 target, raising over $40,000 for essentials like airfare and medication.
- GOAT, a Calgary-based hair salon, provided free salon services to Afghan refugees. Coordinated with Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, they offered over 80 haircuts valued at $4,000.
- Canadian Tire Corporation aided Afghan arrivals with over $260,000 in essential products. Through the Association for New Canadians, they also provided $17,000 in gift cards and a 25% discount at Mark’s for newcomers.
- Books Over Borders donated 1,800 books with themes of resilience and hope to Afghan children, planning to donate 1,000 more.
- Constable Mustafa Popalzai, an Afghan refugee now with Toronto Police, launched Project Hope with Constable Farzad Ghotbi. They gathered over $300,000 worth of essentials through community partners like Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services.
