Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Refugees
Canada is actively pursuing every available means to help Afghan refugees find safety. Collaborating with global allies, Canada initially evacuated around 3,700 individuals from Afghanistan. Many of these individuals had supported Canada’s missions and are now set to start new lives in the country.
In this next phase, Canada remains steadfast in its support for Afghans who have sought refuge in other nations. This effort includes a partnership with the United States to secure safe transit and departure for nationals and Afghan partners who assisted both nations.
Welcoming Newcomers: An International Effort
Under the new agreement, Canada will accept up to 5,000 refugees whose evacuations were facilitated by the U.S. These refugees are part of Canada’s plan to welcome 20,000 displaced individuals, including vulnerable groups like Afghan minorities, women rights advocates, LGBTI individuals, and journalists.
This partnership aims to ease pressures on the global resettlement system, bolstering international efforts to support Afghan refugees and accelerating their relocation to Canada.
