Canada’s Commitment to Afghan Refugees
Canada continues to open its doors to Afghan nationals, aiming to resettle at least 40,000 by year-end. As of April 12, 2023, over 30,000 Afghans have been welcomed, thanks to ongoing efforts by the government and communities across the country.
Recent Arrival and Support
Recently, a charter flight from Pakistan brought new Afghan arrivals to Toronto. These individuals include those who supported Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, family members of interpreters, and privately sponsored refugees. The humanitarian resettlement program prioritizes the most vulnerable, including women leaders, human rights defenders, and religious minorities.
Newcomers will settle in various Canadian communities such as Surrey, Toronto, and London. Despite challenges due to the lack of a Canadian presence in Afghanistan, international cooperation has been crucial in facilitating these resettlements.
Global and Local Partnerships
Collaborations with international partners like the United States and organizations such as the International Organization for Migration have been vital. Within Canada, provincial, territorial, and municipal efforts, alongside resettlement services, have played a significant role in supporting Afghan refugees.
