The collaboration of federal departments, agencies, and provinces has enabled an efficient adaptation to a complex situation.<\/p>\n Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, shared that irregular migrant crossings at Lacolle, Quebec, maintained a steady flow in 2018, with an average of 50 daily interceptions in January. He mentioned ongoing analysis of migration volumes to detect any shifts, particularly for those whose Temporary Protected Status in the U.S. is nearing expiration.<\/p>\n Canada continues to issue a high number of work permits to both regular and irregular migrants, maintaining a 97% approval rate. Minister Hussen detailed the success of the mobile processing unit at Lacolle, which processed 720 asylum claims from November 2017 to February 2018. He stated that similar units would be deployed nationwide should the need arise.<\/p>\n Minister Garneau underscored the government’s commitment of $173.2 million over two years, as announced in Budget 2018, to manage irregular migration effectively. This funding supports new asylum claim intake, eligibility processing, expedited claim processing at the Immigration and Refugee Board, and security measures.<\/p>\n Officials from Public Safety Canada confirmed the activation of the Asylum Seeker Influx National Strategic Response Plan, ensuring preparedness for various scenarios. Regional response plans have made significant advancements, with federal and Ontario officials collaborating on future exercises.<\/p>\n Canadian officials remain in close contact with U.S. counterparts to address shared challenges and policy changes. Member of Parliament Pablo Rodriguez has been actively reaching out to Salvadoran and Hispanic communities in cities like Montreal and Los Angeles, noting the positive impact of these efforts.<\/p>\n Minister Garneau reaffirmed Canada’s dedication to safeguarding its citizens and maintaining secure borders, while treating asylum seekers humanely and adhering to legal standards.<\/p>\n \u201cTogether, we have made significant progress over the last several months in responding to the irregular migration movement.
