L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has introduced a bill to amend the Citizenship Act. This amendment aims to incorporate references to Indigenous Peoples&#8217; rights into the Oath of Citizenship, aligning with recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.<\/p>\n<h3>Recognizing Indigenous Rights<\/h3>\n<p><strong>February 18, 2020 \u2013 Ottawa \u2013 <\/strong>The proposed change acknowledges the rights of First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis Peoples. It reflects Canada&#8217;s commitment to reconciliation and renewing relationships with Indigenous communities based on rights, respect, cooperation, and partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The new Oath text will include: \u201cI swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis Peoples, and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By reciting the Oath, new Canadians vow to uphold Canadian laws and embrace the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
