Since August 2021, Canada has embraced 16,270 Afghan refugees, including over 3,800 children of school age.

As the school year concludes, Canada celebrates the fact that the children of Afghan newcomers have a secure school environment where they can learn and adapt to their new community. This opportunity extends to many young girls who might not have attended school in Afghanistan.

Programs Supporting Afghan Children

Integration and Support Initiatives

Schools across Canada in over 90 communities are welcoming Afghan children. The Saskatchewan Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program offers academic and physical education programs to aid these children in integrating into their classrooms. In Saskatoon, the SWIS Refugee Language Program provides additional support for English language skills, while familiarizing students with Canadian culture.

The Surrey Schools Welcome Centre in British Columbia has welcomed over 550 Afghan children, creating inclusive spaces with school supplies, meal programs, and transportation. Cultural awareness training for educators is delivered by Dari and Pashto-speaking settlement workers.

Educational Resources and Mentorship

In St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Association for New Canadians provides in-person activities and online learning resources. Children benefit from mentorship programs and homework clubs that enhance their English and social skills.

School programs across the nation ensure that Afghan children have the resources they need to learn and play, fostering success in their new school communities.

Voices of Support

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe environment and pursue their dreams to the fullest. These outstanding programs are making a real difference in the lives of Afghan youth by helping them settle in their classrooms and welcoming them with open arms, so that they can thrive in their new communities. We will continue to work tirelessly with all our partners to ensure their success as they adjust to their new life in Canada.”

– The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

“Working with Afghan refugees has been a job that has been very fulfilling and rewarding as a SWIS worker. Schools have put in extra effort to make sure the students have what they need to learn, play and participate, just like their classmates. It has been challenging and time-consuming as SWIS works through a multitude of barriers, such as language, cultural differences, mental health struggles, transportation, finances, programming, winter clothing, electronics for learning and so on. Overall, the families and schools have been extremely appreciative of the work I do as their SWIS worker, and I could not do it without the support of our interpreters.”

– Stephanie April, SWIS worker in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Quick Facts About Afghan Children’s Integration

The SWIS program is part of the Settlement Program designed to integrate newcomer youth and their families into the Canadian education system.
