International students significantly contribute to Canada’s diverse communities, but recent trends have raised concerns. Some institutions have increased student intake for monetary gain, leading to students arriving without adequate support. This surge strains housing, healthcare, and other essential services. In response, the Canadian government is implementing measures to stabilize the international student population.<\/p>\n

Details of the New Cap<\/h3>\n

On January 22, 2024, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced a cap on new international student permits for two years. The 2024 limit is set at approximately 360,000, marking a 35% reduction from 2023. Caps are tailored by province and territory based on population and growth patterns. Notably, this cap excludes renewals, master\u2019s and doctoral candidates, and primary and secondary students.<\/p>\n

Each province and territory will allocate permits to their educational institutions. Starting January 22, 2024, study permit applications must include an attestation letter from a province or territory. This process is set to be established by March 31, 2024.<\/p>\n

Adjustments to Work Permit Eligibility<\/h2>\n

From September 1, 2024, curriculum licensing program graduates will no longer qualify for post-graduation work permits. These programs have grown rapidly but lack the oversight of public colleges.
